Russia: Successful Long Range Test of Fifth-Generation Jet

January 19, 2013

Russia announced yesterday that it fifth-generation stealth jet aircraft the T-50, a prototype for the Sukhoi PAK-FA, successfully completed its first long range test flight.

The jet flew more than 4,300 miles and made two landings on the way from its manufacturing base to an airbase outside of Moscow.  The T-50 is Russia’s latest multirole stealth fighter jet, and is intended to be a counterweight to America’s F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightening II.

The program has encountered delays due to technical problems and cost overruns.

Even so, the recent successful test flight indicates that progress is continuing and the expected date of standard production of 2016 may be achievable.
